General Lunacy

The Gauntlet is Down

In case you haven’t gotten the memo, I read. A lot. In my heyday, before married-lady responsibilities and the black hole of home-ownership and the soul-sucking job, I read a book a day.  That’s my idea of fun.  That’s why I majored in Literature in college, and went on to get my Master’s in the same subject.  Ten solid years of academic study which has no bearing on my present job or everyday life. Good times.  I did that for fun, too, because I like punishing myself. If I could find a career in which the sole object would be to read, then I certainly wouldn’t be a misanthropic desk jockey who blogs in my “spare time.”

I love reading so much, in fact, I participated in this First Books challenge from Reading and Chickens, a fellow blogger who really threw down the gauntlet this time. Oh, it’s on, Ms. Chickens.

First Books

First Book I Loved

Not sure because I started reading so young. I think I was reading before I started talking, I’ve gotta ask my mom. I was obsessed with the Little House books, but I’d already fallen in love before then.  I’m just gonna say Bedtime for Frances by Russell Hoban because it’s still my favorite children’s book.

First Book I Hated

Is it weird that I’ve never hated any book I’ve ever read? Even though I didn’t enjoy reading On the Road, I didn’t hate it.

First Series I Read

Aside from the Little House Series, probably either the Nancy Drew books or the Mandie books. Or The Clan of the Cave Bear books.  My father gave them to me when I was ten (I was a little adult as a kid, so don’t judge him too harshly. I was also a very weird child).

First Fantasy/Sci-Fi Book I Read

I don’t remember which one came first; Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time or an old Sci-Fi book of my dad’s called Cluster.  I don’t remember the author’s name, but I do remember all the green 1970s alien creatures on the cover and the planet with three moons. For some reason that idea really blew my mind.

First Book That Made Me Cry From Laughing

Let’s Pretend this Never Happened, by Jenny Lawson, also known as The Bloggess. I defy you to read that and not laugh hysterically with snot running down your face. I also laughed really hard during The Rainmaker by John Grisham, but I’m not sure it was tear-or-snot-provoking.

First YA Book I Read and Loved

YA wasn’t really a thing when I was growing up (unless Sweet Valley High or The Babysitter’s Club counts. Please say they don’t), and I always preferred “grown-up” books anyway. I didn’t discover the Harry Potter series until well into my late twenties, and it was love at first read.

First Horror Book I Read

I read all of Stephen King’s books as a young teen, and I’m not sure which one came first.  Probably The Shining.

First Book I Was Completely Obsessed With

Since the Little House books get so much attention on my list, let’s just say Pride and Prejudice. That sounds much more sophisticated, and I’m nothing if not trailer park dressed up in sophistication.
More than a little obsessed
